SiteMeta Discoverability

I’m writing down what I’m gonna do in advance, partially just to have written something. We’ll see if I actually follow through with it as described.

Anyways! I haven’t written any posts here in a solid month or two. Part of that is because of traveling around (ngl I kind of hate traveling), part of that it from being stupidly sick (see traveling)…and part of that is from being hesitant about posting anything!

The problem is, “posts” are linked right there on my front page—all of them. Which means, despite claiming that this would be a kind of microblog-y place, I feel like anything I jot down needs to be “worthy” to be here. I think making the true “firehose” of all posts a little less prominent will help mitigate that feeling; things will still be up here, but you’ll only see them if you’re interested enough to go looking for them. (Hey, that’s information-surfacing and “discoverability” stuff, who woulda thunk.)

I think the way my “links” work is a good reference point for a more productive workflow—I really do just dump all kinds of stuff in there all the time. (I need to do more of it, and tend to that info more, but I’m much happier with that setup than I am with the post one.)

So, the changes! The main things here are to:

  1. Swap the “Posts” link on the top to a “blog” link, which goes to a collection of only “blog” posts (which are the polished ones)
  2. Make sure there are at least a few links lying around that can get folks to the full post list, if they want it.

And…that’s it for now! I guess we’ll see if it makes any difference.

Later on I also want to clean up my topics/tags, just to there’s a little more visibility (for me!) into what and how I’m thinking about stuff. It’s way more manageable to find stuff (hmmm, discoverability!) when you don’t have to scroll a massive list, and getting tags working feels like it’d make the site a lot more fun to just click around and stuff. I (earnestly) love me a pointless little tactile experience that exists just for the sake of it.
